An initial installation of a geothermal heat pump will make the standard heat pump prices you see bandied about pale in comparison. There needs to be a system of water pipes installed below the earth surface, generally to 10+ feet in depth and a system similar ran up to the heat pump itself. On top of this you have the cost of the unit itself, which is a few thousand dollars itself. Total estimate of outlay of cash really depends on the unit itself, the brand name you are getting and the installation cost of your contractor. Fully expect to pay anywhere between $8,000 and $30,000. The most likely average price you can expect to pay for a geothermal heat pump system would be around $14,000 installed.
